Our wood fence repair services on the North Shore and in the Laurentians
All types of repairs for your wood fence, regardless of the type or extent of damage
Fence Post Repair and Replacement
Posts are the backbone of your fence. Rot at the base and crooked posts — where wood meets soil — are the #1 problem for fences on the North Shore and in the Laurentians. Freeze-thaw, constant moisture and carpenter ants weaken the wood from the inside.
We replace rotted posts with quality treated wood, installed below the frost line (4 feet minimum). For partially damaged posts, we use metal supports (E-Z Mender) that extend the post's life by 10+ years without excavation.
Warning signs: post that moves when shaken, soft or spongy wood at the base, fence leaning, sawdust at the base of the post (carpenter ants).
Fence Board and Slat Replacement
Fence boards endure the onslaught of wind, snow, branches and freeze-thaw. Broken, split, warped or missing boards — we replace damaged sections using wood matched to your fence.
Cedar, treated wood or spruce — we find the right type of wood to match your fence. New boards will naturally take on the same grey color within a few months, or we can stain immediately for a uniform result.
Warning signs: cracked or split boards, missing boards, wood that crumbles to the touch, dangerous splinters, rusty nails sticking out.
Fence Gate Repair
The gate is the most used part of your fence. Daily openings and closings, wind, frost — hinges wear out, the frame warps, the latch stops working. A gate that drags on the ground or no longer closes is a security and convenience problem.
We repair or rebuild the gate frame, replace hinges, latches and rusty hardware, adjust the gate so it opens and closes perfectly. We also reinforce gate posts that bear more stress than regular posts.
Warning signs: gate dragging on the ground, latch no longer working, rusty or broken hinges, gate that squeaks or resists, gap between gate and posts.
Fence Straightening and Realignment
A leaning fence is not just unsightly — it risks falling over completely. the North Shore and Laurentians's freeze-thaw lifts posts, wind pushes panels, and tree roots displace foundations. Each winter makes the problem worse.
We straighten leaning sections, repair or replace crooked or compromised posts, add diagonal bracing as needed, and redo concrete foundations. Your fence regains its straightness and strength for years to come.
Warning signs: visibly leaning fence sections, posts lifted by frost (concrete collar visible above ground), fence that moves in the wind.
Fence Staining and Sealing
An unprotected fence ages twice as fast. Sun bleaches the wood, rain and snow cause rot, and mold settles on exposed surfaces. Staining and sealing are essential to extend the life of your fence by 10 to 15 years.
We offer high-pressure cleaning, anti-mold treatment, and application of semi-transparent stain or waterproof sealant. Treated wood: every 2-3 years. Cedar: every 3-5 years. Spruce: every 1-2 years.
Simple test: pour water on your fence. If it soaks in instead of beading up, your fence needs protection.
Fence Rail Repair and Reinforcement
Horizontal rails support the weight of all the boards. When they rot or come loose, entire fence sections sag. Rusty metal connectors also lose their strength over time.
We replace damaged rails (2x4 or 2x3), install galvanized or stainless steel hardware, add structural reinforcements and treat the wood against rot and insects. We also install anti-sag kits to prevent future sagging.
Warning signs: boards detaching from rails, sagging rails between posts, visible rusty hardware, undulating fence sections.

What type of post foundation to choose on the North Shore and in the Laurentians?
Each anchoring method has its advantages. Our fence repair experts will advise you on the best option for your terrain and budget.
Poured Concrete (Standard Method)
The most common method on the North Shore and in the Laurentians. The post is installed in a 10-12 inch diameter hole, with 4-6 inches of drainage gravel at the bottom, then poured concrete forming a dome that directs water away from the post. The post must descend below the frost line (4 feet minimum).
Advantages: Very stable, best wind resistance, proven method.
Disadvantages: Difficult to replace posts. Concrete can trap moisture against wood, accelerating rot at the interface. Frost can grip the concrete mass and lift the whole assembly.
Ideal for: Full-panel privacy fences, windy areas, tall fences (6 feet).
Compacted Gravel (Crushed Stone)
The post is installed in 3/4 inch compacted crushed stone, without concrete. The gravel ensures excellent drainage around the post base, significantly reducing the risk of rot.
Advantages: Excellent drainage reduces rot risk, easy to replace posts later, cost-effective, natural water flow away from wood.
Disadvantages: Less stable in very windy areas, may shift slightly over time, requires more depth for tall heavy fences.
Ideal for: Picket fences, low fences, well-drained soils, easy replacement.
Helical Piles
Galvanized steel piles with a helix, mechanically screwed below the frost line. An anchor plate on the surface receives the fence post. A permanent and modern solution, resistant to the North Shore and Laurentians's climate.
Advantages: Installed below frost line, resistant to freeze-thaw, no curing time, all soil types, 75 to 100 year lifespan.
Disadvantages: Higher cost (approximately $200 to $260 per pile), requires specialized installer with hydraulic equipment.
Ideal for: Permanent fences, clay soils (Montreal, Laval, South Shore), terrain with recurring freeze-thaw problems.
Metal Supports (E-Z Mender)
A steel support is bolted to the sound part of the post above the rot line. A steel spike is driven into the ground next to or in place of the rotted base. Quick and economical solution to save a partially damaged post.
Advantages: No excavation needed, low cost ($75 to $150 per post), extends post life 10+ years, quick installation in under an hour.
Disadvantages: Only works if above-ground post section is sound. Not suited for completely rotten or severely leaning posts.
Our specialty: Precise assessment to determine if a metal support is sufficient or if complete replacement is necessary. Save hundreds of dollars per post!

Frequently Asked Questions - Fence Repair on the North Shore and in the Laurentians
Cost varies depending on the scope of work. A typical repair (a few posts and boards) costs between $300 and $950, while a complete replacement can range from $4,600 to $11,000+ for a standard yard. Repair saves you 40% to 70% compared to a full replacement.
Yes, in most cases! A leaning fence is usually caused by crooked or rotted posts at the base. We can reinforce posts with metal supports, add sister posts, redo concrete foundations or install helical piles. The result: a straight, solid fence for a fraction of the replacement cost.
Yes, we hold RBQ license 5622-9370-01. Cabanon-Remise A9 is a division of Beau-frère à louer. All our work complies with the standards of the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ). We are fully insured (liability and property damage).
In most cases, yes. Cedar and treated wood are widely available. New boards will initially be lighter but will take on the same shade as the rest of the fence in 6 to 12 months naturally, or we can apply a matching stain immediately.
Spring (April-June) is ideal for correcting winter damage, and fall (September-November) is perfect for prevention before winter. Summer is the best time for staining and sealing. Emergency repairs can be done year-round, depending on conditions.
Not necessarily! If the above-ground part of the post is sound (even if crooked), we can cut the rotted section and install a metal support (E-Z Mender) driven into the ground. This technique extends the post's life by 10+ years without excavation, for a fraction of the cost of complete replacement.
In the North Shore and Laurentians, according to the Civil Code, a fence on the property line is considered shared (mitoyenne) and both neighbors generally share maintenance and repair costs equally. A fence entirely on your property is your sole responsibility. We recommend discussing with your neighbor before major repairs.
